Cleveland Indians max out 40-man roster by re-signing RHP James Hoyt

It’s been a busy three days for James Hoyt.

On Monday he was designated for assignment by the Indians to make room for new catcher Sandy Leon. Later that day, the Indians didn’t offer him a contract by the 8 p.m. tender deadline and he became a free agent. On Wednesday, he signed a one-year big-league deal and rejoined the Tribe.

He signed a split contract that will pay him $608,500 in the big leagues.

Hoyt, 33, spent most of last season at Class AAA Columbus after being slowed by off-season surgery on his right knee and right elbow. He went 2-0 with a 3.43 ERA and four saves for the Clippers. In 40 appearances, Hoyt struck out 48 and walked 20 in 42 innings.

The Indians brought him to the big leagues on Sept. 1 when the rosters expanded. In eight appearances, he struck out 10 and walked two in 8 1/3 innings. The opposition hit .200 against Hoyt, who pitched in parts of three seasons for the Astros.

The signing of Hoyt gives the Indians a full 40-man roster as their executives prepare to go to the winter meetings next week in San Diego. It’s unclear what kind of chance Hoyt has on making the 25-man roster out of spring training, but the Indians do need to remake the bullpen. Relievers A.J. Cole, Tyler Olson, Tyler Clippard, Dan Otero, Cody Anderson, Danny Salazar and Nick Goody are no longer with the Tribe. Cole signed a minor league deal with the Blue Jays, while Goody was claimed by the Rangers. The Tribe’s pen went 31-18 with a 3.67 ERA, second lowest in the big leagues next to Tampa Bay. Under manager Terry Francona, the bullpen’s ERA has ranged from 2.89 to 3.67 in six of his seven seasons with the Tribe.
